Unix Web Hosting
13/03/2010 00:05
One of our servers providing unix web hosting services was the target last night of a successful attempt to gain unauthorised access and deface customer websites.
An unknown party gained access to the machine by targeting a specific flaw on a customer web site, allowing them to run code that exploited a kernel vulnerability permitting full privilege escalation. Once they had gained access to the machine, the attacker proceeded to deface all index, png, gif and jpg files from every site hosted on the machine.
We have a working machine thanks to our backup and believe the damage caused to be fixed. As far as we've been able to determine so far, this file defacement was the only action taken by the attacker. Since encrypted versions of all customer passwords are stored on that machine, we can't ignore the possibility that they have been copied for use in a recovery attempt.
All passwords on not just the affected machine but all shared platform webservers have been changed. We are forced to take this action because we have many customers who have requested a shared password over multiple sites. Unfortunately, this means that we must request that customers provide new passwords before they are able to log in again. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
